Dozens of students laid on the ground and shouted several slogans during the initial protest.
Several faculty members expressed solidarity with the students. Some professors canceled their Monday lectures until the students’ demands are met.
Karim Mahmoud, a student union member, said they decided to stage the strike until the procedure of offering dormitories has been expedited and a timeline for meals has been set.
Nermine Refaat, a student in the Bulaq dormitories, said the main reason behind the delay of offering the dormitories is fear of student protests, not maintenance.
Meanwhile, dozens of Faculty of Commerce postgraduate students staged protest demanding their exams be re-corrected. They threatened to file lawsuits against the faculty and university administration.
Shaymaa Ahmed, a postgraduate student, said there will be escalatory moves if their demands were not fulfilled. They would file lawsuit against the university at the State Council.
