The army and police troops withdrew on Sunday, from Nahda Square, near the University of Cairo, for the first time in months, in what appeared to be an attempt to avoid clashes with students protesting against the killing of a fellow student by police.
Mohamed Reda, an engineering student at Cairo University was killed by the forces during demonstration inside campus on Thursday. Since then, students in the Faculty of Engineering and eight other departments in the university started a strike.
This is the first time Nahda Square has been empty from police and army forces since the square’s dispersal of pro-Mohamed Morsy sit-in on 14 August.
The troops leaving the vital square left it open to traffic, vastly improving congestion in the area.
