Cairo University expels nine students for demanding dismissal of faculty dean

Cairo University on Thursday expelled nine students from the Faculty of Mass Communication for participating in demonstrations demanding the removal of Faculty Dean Sami Abdel Aziz.

Students and professors from the faculty staged protests two months ago against Abdel Aziz, who they said was a member of the dissolved National Democratic Party and a supporter of ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

The university disciplinary board said the students held banners that were insulting to the dean and other senior university administrators, assaulted Acting Dean Emad Hassan and smashed his car, and hurled Molotov cocktails at the faculty building.

The professors accused of involvement in the protests were referred to a disciplinary board, but say they will escalate their actions against the university administration if their demands are not met.
