The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on Monday evening commenting on rumors that the Egyptian embassy in Sudan had been recently vandalized.
Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ahmed Abu-Zeid said, “It is unfortunate that some media outlets circulated old photos of damage to the Egyptian embassy in Khartoum during the raging armed confrontations in the Sudanese capital.”
The spokesman explained in a statement on his official page on the “X” platform that the event dates back to months ago.
Abu-Zeid explained at the time that in coordination between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the two countries, Egypt had sent a committee to inventory the damage in the unoccupied headquarters, which was devoid of any important documents.
Social media pages circulated pictures showing damage to the Egyptian embassy building in Khartoum and the looting of its contents.
War in Sudan broke out on April 15, 2023 between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces.
The United Nations (UN) says that nearly 25 million people, or half of Sudan’s population, need aid, while about eight million have fled their homes in light of increasing rates of hunger.
