Prime Minister Sherif Ismail attended the reopening of the Nile River shipping line between Cairo and the Delta province of Damietta on Saturday.
The event saw three cargo-loaded barges setting sail to Cairo as part of a reactivation of the line which was first in operation in 2009, but was suspended in 2011.
Through the river shipping line, the government says it seeks to reduce traffic accidents on highways and alleviate pressure on roads. At a later stage, the shipping line will be used to ship cargo to Sudan and Africa.
The operation of the Cairo-Damietta line will cut fuel expenses used for vehicles by 1 to 4 percent, eventually reaching 8 percent.
