The Cairo Criminal Court has sentenced three people to death and another four to life imprisonment over joining the extremist group “Kataa’eb Ansaar al-Sharea Ansaar” (al-Sharea Brigades) on Sunday.
The court also sentenced seven other defendants to 15 year imprisonment and acquitted another nine in the case.
Investigations of Supreme State Security Prosecution revealed on August 2016 that Sayed al-Sayed Atta founded and managed the group, adopting extremist views that urge its members to forcibly change the country’s regime and attack the police and armed forces.
The court also accused the defendants of intentionally killing police lieutenant colonel Mohammed Ead and other 11 police officers, and planning to kill another nine police officers and one civilian.
The investigations showed that the defendants knew each other following the dispersal of the Rabaa and al-Nahda sit-ins and received funds from fugitives abroad to train the group’s members on how to make bombs and target police and military personnel.
