Egypt’s Cairo and Alexandria topped Numbeo grocery index for 10 African cities with the cheapest groceries mid-2024.
The Numbeo grocery index estimates grocery prices in a city relative to New York City. Numbeo calculates each city’s index using item weights from the “Markets” section.

Tripoli, Libya, ranked third with a price index of 24.9, while Durban in South Africa took the fourth spot with an index of 28.9.
Kampala, Uganda, ranked fifth with an index of 30.2. Gaborone, the capital of Botswana, followed in sixth place with an index of 32.2.
Cities in South Africa dominated the remainder of the list, with Pretoria in seventh place at 32.8, Johannesburg in eighth with 32.9, Cape Town in ninth at 33.4, and Port Elizabeth in tenth place with an index of 33.9.
