Cabinet: Violence an attempt to disrupt democratic transition

A Cabinet spokesperson condemned Saturday the violent clashes that broke out in Cairo and several other governorates Friday, saying in a Facebook statement that the violence was aimed at “dragging the country into a cycle of violence and counter-violence which will lead to the failure of the democratic transition process that we all seek to complete with the holding of the parliamentary elections.”

The area around the Muslim Brotherhood’s headquarters in the Moqattam neighborhood of Cairo witnessed most of the clashes after political forces had originally called for peaceful demonstrations there Friday.

The spokesperson called on all political and civil groups to not give political cover to people engaging in violence and attacking party and newspaper headquarters, adding that such attacks do not benefit the country and violate the nation’s security.

He also urged all citizens to express their opinion peacefully and to not break the law or damage property, saying that the government will protect its citizens and public facilities from assault.
