Cabinet approves resignation of Deputy Minister of Transportation

A source in the Ministry of Transportation said that the ministerial cabinet approved the resignation of Deputy Minister of Transportation Amr Shaat after he submitted resignation documents to Minister of Transportation Kamel al-Waziri on Thursday without clarifying his motives for resignation.

Waziri is still considering whom to appoint deputy following Shaat’s resignation, the source added.

Shaat was appointed Deputy to the Minister of Transportation in August 2018 and Assistant to the Minister of Transportation for Railway and Metro Affairs Hesham Arafat in 2017.

Shaat headed the National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) for three months in September 2018.

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly accepted the resignation of Transport Minister Hisham Arafat in February, according to a Cabinet statement, following a train crash at Cairo’s Ramses Station which left more than 20 people dead and 40 injured.

The locomotive collided with the pavement at the end of the line at high speed, causing its fuel tank to explode and triggering a massive fire, officials said.

In response to the incident, six railway workers have been arrested and charged with counts of negligence and manslaughter.
