Hisham al-Alaily, CEO of the National Telecom Regulatory Authority, said Cabinet has approved the fourth mobile phone license.
“Details will be announced in a press conference on Wednesday,” he said.
Telecom Egypt, the sole landline provider, seeks to compete in the mobile phone sector with Egypt’s Mobinil, UAE Etisalat and British Vodafone.
Owning 45 percent of Vodafone Egypt, the company is expected to sell its shares after obtaining the license.
Alaily also said that 1.9 million unidentified lines were shut down. “We are updating customer data to ensure that lines are not used for illegal activities,” he said.
