Egypt’s plan to reduce electricity loads by cutting off electricity for an hour a day will be lifted by the end of the summer, the cabinet announced.
The government put the plan in place on July 17, brought on by increased electricity consumption due to searing heatwaves across the nation.
The plan involved cutting off electricity at throughout the country to reduce daily consumption, which had risen to up to 36 gigawatts.
Cabinet spokesperson Nader Saad announced that the power cuts in Egypt are expected to continue for the first 14 days of September.
He explained that as the country faces more heatwaves, electricity loads rise alongside higher consumption of gas and fuel used to generate electricity, forcing the state to develop its systematic “load reduction plan.”
The more the plan reduces loads and rationalizes electricity consumption, the sooner the power cuts will end, Saad assured.
This will also follow as weather conditions improve, he added, with the hours of power outages within the plan to decrease accordingly.
