Al-Masry Al-Youm has obtained a copy of an official document prepared by the Delta province of Kafr el-Sheikh’s municipal council proving that certain businessmen and government officials had illicitly bought up thousands of acres of state-owned land.
The attorney-general has ordered an investigation into the matter, which reportedly involves almost half of the Kafr el-Sheikh province’s total coastal area.
Residents were initially pleased to see the construction of a new highway, believing that the government planned to provide the area with improved public services. They were later surprised to learn, however, that most of the land adjacent to the highway had been bought up by wealthy businessmen.
After being ignored by local officials, residents say they have reported the matter to Egypt’s attorney-general.
