Brotherhood students moved demonstrations from inside Cairo University to al-Nahda Square outside the main gate, joined by students from both Helwan and Ain Shams universities.
They sprayed the pavement with slogans, such as “Down with military rule” and “Sisi is a murderer.”
The students demanded the release of their colleagues who were detained for assaulting former Grand Mufti Ali Gomaa.
Army and police troops were deployed to the square with two armored vehicles at the entrance and four at the exit.
Meanwhile, scores of students supporting the army held a march in response to the Brotherhood demonstration and chanted slogans praising Sisi.
Campus security separated the two sides to avoid clashes.
