The Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party has called on the military council to hold presidential elections at the same time that the constituent assembly is slated to prepare the new constitution. It has also demanded the council abide by the deadline for handing over power.
In a statement on Monday, the party vowed to create a legislative plan with its partners in parliament so as to meet the people's expectations.
The statement added that the constituent assembly should fairly represent all segments and trends of society.
It also said the Advisory Council’s role, which is to come up with recommendations for the military council, should not be expanded in any way.
The Muslim Brotherhood has won at least 41 percent of the seats in ongoing parliamentary elections. Since the hardline Islamist Nour Party won 20 percent, Islamist parties are slated to occupy the vast majority of the assembly.
Commentators say that such facts give Islamists major influence over the shape a new constitution to be drafted by a 100-member body that the new assembly will pick.
