Police officials say a Belgian tourist has been stabbed and seriously wounded by an unidentified Egyptian assailant in the southern city of Aswan.
The officials say the male tourist was rushed to a nearby hospital after Tuesday’s attack and the assailant was arrested. They did not give the victim’s name or speculate on the attacker’s possible motive.
They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.
Aswan is some 1,100 kilometers south of Cairo.
Since an Islamist insurgency based in southern Egypt was crushed in the 1990s, there have been few organized terrorist attacks in Egypt’s Nile valley or in Cairo, but there have been several bombings over the years in Red Sea resorts.
