Battle for Doctors’ Syndicate midterm elections begins

Three lists of candidates are competing in the Doctors' Syndicate midterm elections, which will take place in Cairo and other governorates on Friday under the supervision of 41 judges from the State Council.

In addition to the lists, which are called “Independence,” “Reform” and “Liberation”, there are 10 candidates competing for chairperson of the syndicate.

The syndicate issued a statement urging doctors to participate in the elections. “Participation broadly confirms the keenness of doctors about their syndicate and profession,” the statement said.

The statement warned of candidates nominated by the Health Ministry, considering it an attempt to control the syndicate.

“Strong participation is the only way to prevent the nationalization of the syndicate by the Health Ministry,” said Dr. Mona Mina of the Independence list. “The syndicate has to be for independent doctors so that it does not become a branch of the Health Ministry.”

“The syndicate must be strong in order to fulfill its urgent tasks of improving salaries, pensions, medical treatment and the legal protection of doctors,” she added.

Dr. Mohamed Fattouh of the Liberation list, which includes doctors from field hospitals during the January 25 Revolution, said his list is competing for 8 out of 12 seats on the board.
