Barclays customers scammed by fake messages with bank logo

Barclays bank customers in Egypt have received messages appearing to be from their bank in an apparent scam to obtain their personal data.

The customers received messages with the bank’s logo and website saying they had won money.

The messages stated that “the World Bank and the Industrial Development Authority of the United Nations” selected them to “win an award estimated at LE6.4 million, and [they] will receive the award from Barclays bank.”

The letter requested that they verify their identity by sending their credit card data through a website that bore the Barclays bank logo.

Bank officials asked branches operating in Egypt to launch information campaigns to educate clients about these scams.
