Dozens of pro-Muslim Brotherhood students at Al-Azhar University protested around the dormitories in Nasr City on Monday, blocking Mostafa al-Nahhas street.
Students have been demonstrating against the government for its labeling of the MB as a ‘terrorist’ organization. They are also protesting against the continued arrest of colleagues at student-led protests since September.
Traffic came to a complete stop and clashes erupted between protesters and drivers. Police fired teargas bombs to disperse protesters and central security enacted tight measures around the dormitories.
Other students continued their exams at the university amidst the high security.
A security source said police increased their presence around faculties that saw violence on Saturday in order to protect students who decided to take exams.
Some students tried to prevent their colleagues from entering the testing area at the Faculty of Agriculture, but security personnel intervened.
