We’ve been hearing constantly about Egyptian footballers’ achievements abroad, from Mohamed Salah to Mohamed ElNeny, Egyptians have won several awards and have proved themselves worthy. In the meantime, a non-Egyptian has been taking the Egyptian football league by storm. Ahly and Moroccan forward Walid Azaro scored in Ahly’s 1-0 victory over Wadi Degla on Tuesday, with the goal crowning Azaro as the highest-scoring foreigner in history in a single Egyptian League season.
With 18 goals under his wing, 22-year-old Azaro overtook Angolan striker Flavio as well as former Ismaili and Nigerian forward John Utaka, who both held the previous joint-record of 17 goals.
Utaka set his record in the 2000-01 season while Flavio achieved the same tally in 2006-07.
Successes for Azaro continue as his team are expected to be crowned champions for the 2017/18 season. Ahly currently holds the top spot with 82 points, with an impressive 22-point lead over second-placed Ismaily.
Azaro started his career with Adrar Souss in the third division of the Moroccan league. He participated in the final of CAF Champions League in 2017.
