Automatic rifles seized from vehicle on Cairo-Alexandria Desert Road

Giza Security Directorate patrols on Sunday morning seized 28 automatic rifles hidden in a secret compartment of a pick-up truck driving on the Cairo-Alexandria Desert Road, a security source told Al-Masry Al-Youm on Monday.

The security patrol became suspicious of the red pick-up truck after it passed through a tollgate, the source said. When the car was stopped, the driver, a 35-year old-man from Sohag, attempted to flee, leading to a police chase, the source added.

After the patrol apprehended the subject, the rifles were discovered after an examination of the truck, the source said.

Egypt has witnessed a boom in illegal arms sales due to a security void since the early days of the January 25 revolution, according to media reports. The Interior Ministry often announces incidents of weapons smuggling through the western border with Libya and southern border with Sudan.
