The Aswan governorate in Upper Egypt has suffered a severe power outage for the past two days due to heavy rains accompanied by strong winds never seen in the governorate before, the independent Masrawy news website reported on Monday.
The website reported the chairman of the Upper Egypt Electricity Distribution Company, Ahmed Sedky saying on Monday that the electricity is currently stable and reaches every place in Aswan.
Sedky explained that when the power went out, six emergency units of different capacities were dispatched to strategic areas, including Aswan Airport and some public hospitals where citizens were present.
Up to 1,000 meters of cables were provided to replace ground cables with overhead lines, he said, so that the company could restore electricity to areas affected by power outages, until a final solution is found to strengthen and modernize the network.
The electricity, distribution, transportation and production crews in Aswan are experts at facing challenges, he noted, foremost among which are the high temperatures, as well as humidity and difficult terrain.
Coordination is currently underway between the Upper Egypt Electricity Distribution Companies, the Upper Egypt Electricity Transmission Region, and the Hydroelectric Power Plants Company to produce electricity to re-evaluate the entire Sahara area network, Sedky said, especially since it is an isolated area.
