Authorities order demolition of 10 buildings in Cairo

The authorities issued demolition orders for ten buildings in the Khalifa district that are on the verge of collapse. The 30 families living in the buildings requested that the government provide them with alternative housing before they evacuate.

"Eight years ago the authorities denied us permits to renovate our building," said Amma Mahmoud, one of the residents. "Where do I go now?"

Local Council President Atef Megahid said the houses were built without licenses as the land belongs to the Council of Antiquities and is considered an archaeological site. "The buildings are in bad shape and may fall at any minute," he said. "We cannot wait until the residents find other places to go."
