Authorities comment on suspected appearance of tiger shark in Marsa Alam

Claims spread on social media report the reappearance of a tiger shark off the coast of the Red Sea, specifically in the city of Marsa Alam.

The spokesperson for the Egyptian Environment Ministry, Heba Maatouk explained on Saturday that: “The ministry has not yet received any report, and what was reported in the past few hours about the appearance of a tiger shark in Marsa Alam is incorrect.”

Maatouk assured that the ministry would issue an official statement in the event of a confirmed sighting of any dangerous sharks.

It is normal for sharks to be present in the depths of the Red Sea, she said, and it reflects a stable marine environment.

The spokesperson appealed to citizens not to publish and circulate misleading news and urged people to enjoy their vacations.

In June 2023, a shark attacked a Russian tourist in the Red Sea, tearing him apart and devouring him completely.

At that time, the Environment Ministry issued a statement confirming that a tiger shark had attacked a beach-goer, leading to his death. It was later revealed that the tourist was Russian.
