Employees of the American University in Cairo (AUC) began a strike on Sunday, after the administration frequently stepped back from its promises to the independent trade union of the university workers.
According to the trade union, the main issues, already agreed upon, include that renewal of workers’ contracts, which should be done for a period of at least three years, staff promotions every five years as per university regulations, annual and periodic pay raises and other issues.
AUC employees have resorted to strikes on more than one occasion since October 2010. The last protest was a precautionary strike staged two weeks ago, which lasted for only one day.
