On Tuesday the American University in Cairo (AUC) reached an agreement with students and workers who have been on strike since 11 September.
For the first time, AUC presented its budget to its society of students and employees at an open forum held on Tuesday to bolster transparency.
In a statement, AUC said it is holding a meeting to explain its decision to increase fees by 9 percent, adding that it will provide documents detailing its revenues and expenditures.
The statement said the university has decided to consider raising fees after a committee of students and university members has been formed. The committee should submit its recommendations on 15 February at the latest.
AUC also decided to increase the representation of students and employees in the university's consultative council, which discusses and approves university policies.
It also decided to raise the salaries of security guards to LE1500 starting from October, and agreed that cleaners should work five days per week.
AUC President Lisa Anderson said there are several demands from employees and students which have yet to be addressed.
She added that the university will work to achieve equality for all and to retain the confidence of its students and graduates.
On a different note, 55 security guards entrusted with safeguarding the bus area were reportedly fired by the AUC administration on Tuesday without providing justification.
“The administration terminated our work today without giving us any reasons for the decision,” Abdel Rahman Mahmoud, a security guard, told Al-Masry Al-Youm via phone, adding that they have been working for the university without contracts.
