A source at committee dispatched by the African Union to monitor the presidential elections in Egypt said that the mission, consisting of 45 members, will follow up the presidential elections scheduled to be held on 26 and 27 May in Cairo and a number of governorates including Giza, Sharqiya, Beni Suef, Fayoum, Luxor and Aswan.
The source said – in a statement on Thursday – The African Union has followed up the elections in five countries since the beginning of this year namely South Africa, Algeria, Malawi, Guinea Bissau, and Egypt.
The source pointed out that this mission was invited by the Egyptian government and would hold during its visit to Cairo several meetings with the Presidential Elections Commission, political parties, civil society organizations, and other international organizations present in Egypt to monitor the elections.
The African Union has suspended Egypt's membership following the ouster of President Mohamed Morsy in July 2013.
Observers believe that the African Union's presence in Egypt to monitor the presidential elections indicates it has accepted the democratic transition, following the overthrow of Morsy.
