Attorney General bans Mubaraks from travel, freezes their assets

Attorney General Abdel Meguid Mahmoud has issued a travel ban on ousted president Hosni Mubarak and his immediate family, also ordering that their assets be frozen.

The Mubaraks face charges of acquiring wealth illegally.

A statement from the Attorney General's office said this covers cash, real estate, stocks and other securities at banks and companies inside Egypt.

The ban and freeze apply to Hosni Mubarak, his wife Suzanne Saleh Thabet, sons Alaa and Gamal, their wives Heidi Rasekh and Khadiga al-Gammal, and their children.

Banks and other concerned authorities have been notified, according to the statement.

The statement further said that the prosecution is investigating reports filed against Mubarak and his family, adding that some documents have yet to be verified as reliable evidence.

Information is being gathered to address those reports, the statement added.

The Attorney General had earlier ordered the freezing of the Mubaraks' assets in foreign countries and asked the Egyptian Foreign Ministry to contact judicial authorities overseas to adopt all the necessary procedures.
