Aswan Governor Ismail Kamal on Sunday assured that there are no cholera cases in the areas of Abu al-Rish and Daraw, refuting rumors being spread online.
During an interview with Ahmed Moussa’s TV show “Ala Massoulity” (On My Responsibility), Kamal added that the number of deaths in Aswan according to the latest statement is five individuals – all due to diseases not related to the widespread intestinal flu.
“The death rate in Aswan did not increase during that period, but is at its normal level. The infections present in the hospital now are not worrying, and I drank the water in Abu al-Rish in front of the citizens to show the extent of its safety,” he continued.
Regarding rumors of a chemical factory discharging into one of the Nile River water stations, the governor confirmed that, “An industrial wastewater treatment plant was built, and periodic water analyses were conducted at the station, and work is underway to change the sewage system as part of the Decent Life Initiative.”
“We are preparing a big celebration in Aswan to start the tourist season on Friday, and we are following up on tourist groups and hotel reservations, and not a single group has been cancelled,” he said, warning against claims from those who seek to spread panic.
The Health and Population Ministry issued a detailed statement on Saturday regarding the latest developments in the southernmost governorate of Aswan, following the mysterious spread of infectious diarrhea.
The ministry’s spokesperson, Hossam Abdel-Ghaffar explained that “Patients admitted to hospitals (in Aswan) were examined, and medical services provided to them were followed up.”
He said that after “initial tests of water stations and homes, it was proven that there is no change related to the presence of bacteria or microbiological change in water stations.”
