Army thwarts prisoner escape attempt in Alexandria

Relatives of five men detained by police in Alexandria failed in an attempt to free them from a police van that was transporting them to prison. They attacked the van, setting fire to it and destroying it.

However, the military managed to transport the suspects to prison in an armored vehicle instead.

Police and soldiers attempted to disperse the attackers by firing shots in the air, but were initially unsuccessful.

Eyewitnesses said that passersby later gathered around the police station where the prisoners were being detained prior to transportation, protecting it from assault.
