Ruling miliatary officials stormed the presidential residences in Heliopolis and Abdeen in Egypt's capital on Wednesday, putting the offices of the former president's chief of staff, Zakaria Azmi, under their custody.
The move, sources said, was made following reports that Azmi, with the help of his aides, had shredded tens of thousands of documents.
The same sources said Azmi took the action three days after President Hosni Mubarak left his Heliopolis home for his currrent residence in Sharm el-Sheikh.
Meanwhile, leaders at the governing Supreme Council of the Armed Forces said the presidential palace is under army control. But there have been numerous stories about Azmi's movements, and the contact he had with Mubarak until recently.
"Azmi paid several visits to Mubarak in Sharm el-Sheikh after the latter had stepped down as president," according to the sources. They said the former president's offices in both districts contain original copies of his declared and private decrees, as well as memos he received from state institutions and foreign countries.
