Army ready to protect country, but not involved in politics, says military source

The Armed Forces is reinforcing security at the borders and in other strategic areas ahead of Friday’s protests marking the second anniversary of the 25 January revolution.

A military source told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the army would be prepared to fight back against possible attacks should there be political unrest in the coming days.

The Armed Forces will operate professionally to defend the homeland, and seek every way possible to improve the combat efficiency of its officers and soldiers, the source said.

The Armed Forces has repeatedly stated that it was returning to its official role and pulling out of the political sphere and its conflicts, but the media keeps trying to drag the army into current events, the source said.

"The Armed Forces have nothing to do with politics, will not participate in any events, and will not abandon [safeguarding] the stability of the country," he added.

It’s the Ministry of Interior’s job to secure demonstrations, the source said, adding that in his opinion the ministry had recently regained a large measure of its capacity and efficiency, with the help of the Armed Forces and other state institutions.

He also added that securing vital facilities and governmental institutions is the duty of the presidential guards.
