Army guards close to Egypt’s western borders have foiled a smuggling operation aimed at bringing weapons and drugs into the country north of the Salloum crossing, close to Libya.
Guards seized 4 bags containing 10 automatic rifles, 10 ammunition magazines and around 50 kilogrammes of hashish, a statement on the Armed Forces’ Spokesperson Facebook page stated on Tuesday.
Since popular revolts deposed ruling regimes in both Egypt and Libya in 2011, cross-border smuggling between the two countries has become a serious problem for authorities.
Earlier this month, security forces also confiscated 15 automatic rifles, 17 magazines, and 70,000 Tramadol tablets in the same area.
