Commander of Egypt’s Second Field Army, Major General Ahmed Wasfy, has lauded citizens at the restive Sinai Peninsula for responsiveness to army call to hand over unlicensed weapons.
“I offer you thankfulness and appreciation for this nationalist initiative which you took out of a belief in the your positive role supporting the Armed Forces in clearing criminal havens and eliminating extremist elements,” Wasfy said during the handover ceremony which witnessed the submission of 103 guns of various kinds.
A number of Sinai chieftains had declared unconditional approval of the army’s call.
A number of citizens said they believe unlicensed arms are no more needed given the “strong intervention of army and police forces” which restored security to North Sinai.
People in Matrouh, on Egypt’s western borders with Libya, had responded to a similar initiative.
