Sixty "extremists" were killed and 102 "suspects" were arrested in a security crackdown on North Sinai, Egypt's armed forces said in a statement on Saturday.

A total of 123 bases, 247 hideouts, and six farms, which were used to target army and police forces were destroyed, the statement added.

Rifles, ammunition, and parts of equipment were also discovered in 17 tunnel openings in North Sinai's Rafah near the borders. Three cars loaded with over 650 kgs of cannabis were confiscated.

Three Palestinians were also arrested after they had infiltrated Egypt through a tunnel, according to the statement.
