Egypt’s military said it killed 14 militants in Sinai raids during the periood 18-20 December as the Armed Forces continue its operatios against extremist groups in the restive peninsula.
The armed extremists were killed in an exchange of fire with the forces attempting to escape security checkpoints and while allegedly staking out troops, army spokesperson Mohamed Samir said on his Facebook page.
Fourty-five militant suspects were arrested during that period, Samir added, noting that mutiple unlicensed vehciles used for attacks on security forces had been destroyed, while weapons allegedly planned for use in terrorist attacks were seized.
Egyptian security has been struggling to combat extremist groups which have expanded operations in the Sinai Peninsula and claimed responsiblity for several deadly operations against the forces since the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsy.
