Egypt's Supreme Council of the Armed Forces is currently studying possible nominees for the position of secretary-general of the Arab League to replace current league chief Amr Moussa, whose term will expire in May.
According to informed sources, Mostafa al-Fiqi, former head of the Shura Council's foreign affairs committee, is the first choice for the post given his good relations with Arab heads-of-state and his relative distance from the regime of former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak.
The same sources said that Arab countries currently not on good terms with Egypt had agreed to the choice of al-Fiqi, who is known for his pan-Arab inclinations.
Al-Fiqi formerly served as Egypt’s permanent representative to the Arab League and as vice-president of the Arab Parliament.
The armed forces council is keen to improve Egypt's relations with several Arab countries, including Qatar, Syria and Algeria.
Former Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mufid Shehab had earlier applied for the position of Arab League secretary-general, but withdrew the application following his recent dismissal.
