Arab tribes to consider consensus candidate for president

Arab tribes plan to meet next month to select a consensus presidential candidate to support in the upcoming election.

Representatives of Arab tribes nationwide will attend the meeting, which will be held in Cairo's Obour district, according to Ali Freij, the chairman of the Arab Party for Justice and Equality.

Freij told state news agency MENA that the tribes will demand that the candidate select a deputy from a list of names provided by the tribal chiefs. Freiji claims that Arab tribes and Egyptians who identify with them account for 10 million registered voters and that they will have a strong influence on the presidential election.

The Arab Party for Justice and Equality, however, failed to win any seats in the People's Assembly in elections that ended in January.
