Arab League’s economic council to discuss sanctions on Syria

The Social Economic Council affiliated with the Arab League will meet within the next three days to discuss imposing economic sanctions on Syria, Al-Masry Al-Youm has been told.

Diplomatic sources said the Arab League has many choices of sanctions it could impose on Syria without harming the people. They mentioned the possibility of imposing economic sanctions in more than one field.

Bank transactions to Syria are expected to be stopped, they added. Freezing the Syrian regime’s money and halting Arab projects in Syria and trips are some possibilities. The source said these sanctions will affect the Syrian regime, not the people.

Sources said Arab foreign ministers will impose economic sanctions because Syria has violated the terms of initiative the league proposed to resolve the violent situation in Syria, which had been approved by the Syrian regime without reservations.

Sanctions require the approval of two-thirds of Arab League foreign ministers, the sources added.
