The Arab League offered former presidential hopeful Mohamed ElBaradei the position of special envoy to Syria, a London-based newspaper reported Wednesday.
Asharq Al-Awsat said Arab League Secretary General Nabil al-Araby proposed ElBaradei as the special envoy to implement the league's initiative to end bloodshed there.
The newspaper quoted an "informed source" as saying that ElBaradei told Araby he would consider taking the position.
ElBaradei, former director of the International Atomic Energy Agency, announced on 14 January he would not run for president in objection to the military's failure to run the country.
The Gulf Arab states on Tuesday withdrew their observers from Syria after the country rejected an Arab League plan for President Bashar al-Assad to step down.
The uprising in Syria was inspired by other revolts in the region that have toppled three Arab leaders. The regime's months-long violent crackdown on protesters has battered Assad's standing in the world, with Iran among his few remaining allies.
The United Nations estimates more than 5,000 Syrians have been killed since March 2011.
