Arab art figures call for a decisive stance on terrorism

A number of Egypt-based artists have voiced anger toward the recent attack on an Alexandria church that killed 21 and injured 96.

Actress and producer Issad Younis reacted to the incident by planning to accompany her family and friends to Coptic Christmas celebrations set for 7 January. Younis invited fellow Egyptians to follow suit.

Director Khaled al-Hagar, meanwhile, said anger predominated Egyptian sentiment following the deadly explosion, adding that he felt embarrassed at the recurrence of such incidents and predictions of more attacks. Al-Hagar said he is currently working on a new TV series called “Shubra Street” that portrays intimate relationships between Muslims and Christians in a district famous for its religious diversity.

Young movie star, Khaled Abul Naga, who also acts as a UN goodwill ambassador, called upon all Egyptians to take part in next Thursday’s Christmas celebrations in order to express solidarity with Egypt’s Copts.

Egyptian megastar Adel Imam urged Egyptians to hang black fliers on the roofs of their homes as an expression of mourning.

Scriptwriter Waheed Hamed, for his part, described the attack as a “distressing start to the new year.” He called for severe punishment for the “stone-hearted” people who had committed the crime.

Iraqi musician Nuseir Shamma expressed rage following the attack. Disregarding religious and racial divides, he called for a stop to all forms of harm to the human race.
