April 6 movement rejects potential nomination of diplomat to Foreign Ministry post

Egypt's April 6 Youth Movement on Wednesday rejected the potential nomination of former Ambassador to the US Nabil Fahmy to the foreign minister post.

Sources told Al-Masry Al-Youm on Monday that the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces might name Fahmy to succed former Foreign Minister Nabil al-Araby, who was selected Arab League chief earlier this week.

In a statement, the movement asked Prime Minister Essam Sharaf to consult other political forces and the revolution’s youth to select a foreign minister who would represent the people.

The movement accused Fahmy of defending former President Hosni Mubarak’s regime.

Fahmy served as Egypt’s ambassador to Washington from 1999 to 2008 and is currently the dean of the School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at the American University in Cairo.

Other names, such as Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Faiza Abul Naga, have circulated as potential nominees.
