Anti-government protests erupt in Assiut

Egyptian villagers in the southern governorate of Assiut blocked a main highway for four hours to protest the lack of subsidized bread, witnesses said.

Rumeia villagers on Sunday blocked the Assiut-Cairo highway and set fire to tires, blaming the government for failing to curb bakeries selling subsidized flour on the black market.

In Manfalout, one of Assuit’s main cities, around 2000 municipal employees and workers went on strike demanding better living conditions and accusing senior officials of corruption.

Witnesses said that angry demonstrators set on fire the formerly-ruling National Democratic Party’s headquarters on the city.
