Anger persists in Qena as Internet outage continues

People in the Upper Egyptian province of Qena are still voicing their discontent about an Internet blackout which resulted from a fire in a telecommunications building late last week.

Mohamed Abdel Fattah, a Qena citizen, told the Welad El Balad website that the outage has kept many people from communicating with relatives abroad or performing their daily Internet-related routines. “Had it been out for a single day in Cairo, things would have turned upside-down, but here in Upper Egypt, nobody cares about us,” he said.

Mohamed al-Sayyed, the owner of a travel company, said the five-day glitch has caused processing issues for his customers.

Qena governor Abdel Hamid al-Haggan told Welad El Balad that temporary cables have been provided to secure Internet for affected regions until the problem is fixed.

Egypt’s Internet subscribers stand at more than 28 million, according to statistics by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics last August.
