The New Cairo Prosecution office on Tuesday has moved to refer singer Amr Diab to the Misdemeanor Court over slapping a young fan during a party at a major hotel in Cairo.
The New Cairo Misdemeanor Court set this November to begin the artist’s trial.
The case began after a video clip from the wedding of producer Mohamed al-Saadi’s daughter went viral, which fan Osama al-Kotari trying to take a selfie picture with Diab after his segment ended and then getting slapped in the face.
Diab did not respond to the outrage over the incident and has closed comments on all his official social media accounts.
Fan files lawsuit
Twenty lawyers from Esna in Luxor, the hometown of Kotari, filed a direct misdemeanor lawsuit against Diab, the owner of the hotel where the incident occurred, and the head of the Musicians Syndicate.
According to the lawsuit, this incident is not the first of its kind but was preceded by days of inappropriate treatment to one of the sound engineers at the wedding of the young artist Reem Sami, the sister of director Mohamed Sami.
Diab reportedly embarrassed the sound engineer in an inappropriate manner, as he hit him on the back in passing and then expelled him in front of the attendees.
Meanwhile, Diab’s lawyer filed a report at the First Settlement Police Station against Kotari for reportedly pinching and harassing him at the wedding of producer Saadi’s daughter.
Kotari’s father said, “My son is going through a bad psychological state. A report was filed against artist Amr Diab. We are proud Upper Egyptians and we will take our rights by law. This is a great insult to us.”
