A 23-year-old man died in clashes at the Ettehadiya Presidential Palace on Friday night, Mohamed Sultan, the head of the Ambulance Authority, reported.
According to Sultan, the man died of live ammunition in the chest near the palace.
He added that 68 people were injured in clashes that raged between protesters and security, following a day of protests and marches at the Presidential Palace.
Police used tear gas and bird shots, as well as live ammunition according to eye witnesses. Protesters, in the meantime, hurled molotov cocktails at security forces.
Ministry of Interior Spokesman Hani Abdel Latif said in a statement following the clashes that the ministry has been the victim of current political conflicts, and that it is paying the price for the impasse that Egypt is going through. He added that the police won't leave the street because they are there to protect the people.
His comments came following a video circulated widely online, showing policemen dragging a protester near the palace, stripping him naked and beating him up. The video raised wide criticism about police brutality.
