US Ambassador to Egypt Anne Patterson said in a statement released Sunday that her country will back the presidential candidate that Egyptians select.
She said she hoped that Egypt would pass through the transitional period to arrive at a democracy.
Patterson assured that the US would collaborate with the next Egyptian president even if he was an Islamist. She added that the United States respects Egyptians' choice and described the presidential polls as a historic opportunity for all Egyptians.
Patterson's comments came on the sidelines of the inauguration of a number of development projects in Cairo, Alexandria, and Giza. The projects are funded by the US Agency for International Development as part of an American program supporting democratic development.
