A taxi driver who set himself on fire in Alexandria last week has died in hospital as a result of his unjuries, according to health officials.
Mostafa Kamel Hospital in Alexandria said he on Saturday that Ashraf Shahin died as the result of burns covering 85 percent of his body.
Shahin set himself on fire in the Sidi Gaber district after a police report was filed against him, accusing him of robbery.
His family claimed the report was fabricated and blamed his suicide on his feeling of injustice.
Montazah Misdemeanor Court cleared Shahin of the robbery charge, a verdict that was reached two days after Shahin set himself on fire.
Yasser Shahin, the dead man's brother, told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the hospital informed them about the death, saying they would collect the body and conduct a burial service.
“My brother died of injustice,” he said.
Eyewitnesses said Shahin doused himself in gasoline outside the entrance of The Coast Club and then set fire to himself. Passersby were able to put out the flames, and he was taken to hospital.
A video showing the man trying to set himself ablaze went viral on Facebook.
