Alexandria security chief trial adjourned

Mansoura Criminal Court adjourned the trial of Alexandria's current chief of security, who served as Daqahlia's chief of security during the 25 January revolution, on Saturday. The trial will resume on 12 June.

Last week the attorney general referred Ahmed Abdel Basset, along with some of his assistants and other police officers, to trial for ordering the killing of peaceful protestors during revolution. The others include Adel al-Barbari, director of the central security forces for the east Delta; Mahmoud Saqr, chief of Mansoura's law enforcement unit; and Hossam Abdel Rahman, an officer in Daqahlia's security force.

The indictment stated that between 26 and 31 January the defendants encouraged and ordered the killing of protestors. They allegedly incited officers securing demonstrations in public squares in Daqahlia to fire at protesters, aiming to kill some to terrify the rest.

Abdel Basset, as a public servant, is also accused of causing serious harm to the public institution where he worked.
