Troops in Alexandria thwarted an attempt to smuggle 40 inmates while returning from court to Borg al-Arab Prison on Sunday, as three vehicles with masked gunmen intercepted the prison truck and started firing, said Major General Amin Ezz Eddin, Alexandria security chief.
Troops returned fire and gained control of the situation, arresting 11 of the assailants, while authorities are still on the lookout for the other 18 attackers who escaped with two prisoners freed during the exchange.
Alexandria Prosecution ordered remanding 11 individuals for four days pending investigations on accusations of thuggery, resisting authorities assaulting Police Captain Mohamed Hamed and other personnel, blocking roads and damaging a police vehicle.
The other 18 assailants were ordered to be arrested in the incidents.
Meanwhile, Alexandria security services are intensifying efforts to search for the two prisoners who were on a prison truck when masked gunmen opened fire.
