Alexandria MP becomes first to resign from parliament

Independent MP Kamal Ahmed from Alexandria submitted his resignation on Tuesday to the secretary general of the House of Representatives just two days after parliament held its opening session on Sunday.

According to Al-Masry Al-Youm, Ahmed submitted his resignation for health reasons. In addition to health reasons, however, several newspapers and websites also reported that Ahmed resigned due to his discontent with the way parliament is being run.

Al-Watan and Elbadil newspapers said Ahmed submitted his resignation to object to the way the House of Representatives is being managed.

State-run Al-Ahram also quoted sources close to Ahmed as citing the mismanagement of parliament as the reason behind his resignation. Al-Shorouk newspaper quoted Ahmed as saying that the acts of some MPs have turned parliament into a "circus".

According to Wafd news website, other MPs are trying to convince Ahmed to backtrack on his resignation.

Ahmed is the first MP to submit his resignation in the new parliament. He ran for the speaker position and garnered 36 votes, but lost to Ali Abdelaal who won the position after securing 401 votes.

Ahmed was an MP in the 1976, 2000 and 2005 parliaments.
